Writing Content that Appeals to Google

Every website owner wants their page to be at the top of the results in the Google search engine, so that more potential clients can find out what they offer and visit their website. But how is this achieved? Here are some SEO (Search Engine Optimization) strategies that you can use to get ranked higher organically, without paying for ads.

It’s all in the keywords

When you write content for your website, you should think about what you want to be found for. What would your potential client need to type into the Google search box to find your website? Be as specific as you can. For example, the word “photography” is a broad search term, it will return millions of various kinds of results, and is very hard to get ranked for. But people are also searching for “how to take sunset photos with a smart phone”, which is more specific, and will generate more specific search results. Do people know the right terms for your services? What different phrases might they put in? And people might not necessarily google the solution that you offer, they might instead google their problem. For example, if you are a physiotherapist, you might want people to find you when they search for “back pain”.

When you have a list of keywords and phrases, incorporate them naturally into the texts and contents on your website. And remember to also include your business name. You want to come up in the search results if people google you!

Keyword Stuffing

Now, with this in mind, you should take care to not overdo it when using your keywords, because if you use them excessively Google will punish you for keyword stuffing, and rank you lower. It has to be a naturally flowing text that makes sense to the reader.

Getting Local Traffic

If you want to target local clients, make sure to be clear about where you are located. It’s a good idea to include your city and region names, including nick names (Lower Mainland, North Shore etc.) as keywords on your site, and not just on your Contact page.

Setting up your Google My Business page and claiming your page on Yelp are also good ways of being found, and at the same time showing Google some of that expertise and authority.

Tools

There are a lot of free tools out there. Here are some:

Expertise, Authority and Trust

There are a lot of self proclaimed “experts” on the internet, but a lot of the expertise is questionable, to say the least. Therefore, Google has recently added a team of real people to evaluate the quality of search results.
To get on their good side, and ensure a higher ranking, the purpose of your website should be clear to the user as soon as they land on your page. They also like to see that your content is helpful to users. The longer time that users spend on your time, reading articles and clicking around to different pages, the better Google will understand that your content is beneficial and interesting. Testimonials also send a great “trust signal” to Google.

Backlinks

Having your name/business name mentioned on lots of other websites, and having other people link to your site, are both good ways of showing Google that you have authority, and that people trust you. You could for example do guest blogs on other sites, or exchange logos and links with people and business that you partner with.

What Else Can I Do?

Blogging

Google loves fresh content, so keep updating your website often with new material. A great way of doing that is to have a blog. And that also gives you more opportunities to add keywords to your site! Make sure that your pages have at least 300 words each. A blog is a great way of keeping users on your site, and coming back for more. Include your name, photo and short bio after each post to show Google that you are the expert.

Images

It’s a good idea to use original photographs and images as much as possible. Stock photo’s tend to rank lower on Google since they have been used by thousands of websites before, and Google appreciates original content.

Pro-Tip!

Google loves it when you have videos on your site! You can upload them in YouTube and embed them on the website. Google will rank websites with videos even higher than a frequently updated blog. Google owns YouTube, and they work well together.

Back End

At Scanway Web Design we will take care of all the backend SEO for you. We will optimize images, url’s and meta descriptions, create and submit an XML Sitemap to Google, make sure the site has no broken links, etc.

In The End

Write for your clients

Ultimately, your content should be written for your potential client, and you want them to get as much out of it as possible. That is what will benefit your business in the end, and that is what Google will reward you for. Make sure that your content is well-written and informative. Explain what services you offer, to whom, and why they should choose you. And remember that word-of-mouth is the best advertising!
